Every hurricane has a silver lining: It was shaping up to be a bad year for the Weather Channel, which depends on bad weather for viewership. Recent layoffs claimed 80 workers after viewership dropped 18.5 percent. But superstorm Sandy has helped ratings.
It still lost 80 employees, but this time it wasn't layoffs; reporters and camera crews were carried off by high winds and seas.
Don't know much about history: On this day in 1948. President Harry S. Truman, D-Yes, There's a Period After the S, surprised the experts by winning a narrow victory over challenger Thomas Dewey, R-Footnote.
The Chicago Daily Tribune's famous headline, "Dewey Defeats Truman," was actually accurate when you read the smaller type below that read, "At Scrabble as Both Waited for Returns."
