CENTRALIA -- The Lewis County sheriff's office says an intoxicated 19-year-old man accused of punching a 5-month-old puppy in the face has been arrested.
Chief Deputy Stacy Brown said the dog is expected to recover.
Brown says the man's relatives called the sheriff's office at about 1 a.m. Friday, saying a family member was out of control and had punched their German Shepherd puppy named Bernice.
One of the puppy's eyes was swollen and bloodshot and she was limping. Brown said relatives said they thought the young man had also thrown the puppy against a tree.
Jesse Pegram of Ethel was arrested for investigation of first-degree animal cruelty.
Dr. Chet Iverson of Cascade West Veterinary Hospital in Centralia agreed to see the dog in the middle of the night and a deputy drove the animal to the clinic.
Another veterinarian, Dr. Chris Affeldt, said Bernice is expected to make a full recovery and may be transferred this weekend to the Lewis County Animal Shelter.
