Financial trouble shuts down Ballinger golf course

Ballinger Lakes Golf Course in Mountlake Terrace has closed temporarily, evidently due to ongoing financial problems at the city-owned course along the north shore of Lake Ballinger.

In a Tuesday phone message, Ken Courtmanch, the Mountlake Terrace's parks and property management superintendent, said the city does "not know what is going to happen in the near future. At this point, the concessionaires decided they could no longer run it as of business close on Sunday, (Nov.) 4th. ... At this point, that's really all we know."

Since September of 2005, nine-hole Ballinger Lakes GC has been operated by Tyrone and Carol Hardy, a husband and wife, and the respective president and vice-president of Hardy Golf LLC. But financial problems caused by the economic downturn in recent years evidently led the Hardys finally to decide they could no longer continue operations.

In March, friends and customers contributed money to allow the Hardys to pay past due rent of $25,280 to the city.

Tyrone and Carol Hardy could not be reached for comment.
