When Greg Powell took over the Darrington volleyball program 24 seasons ago, it wasn't quite the strong program it is now.
"When I started in Darrington the girls that came out were really just non-athletes or basketball players hoping to stay in shape," Powell said. "Since then it's become important to the community."
In no short order Powell turned the program around, helping the Loggers to a state appearance in 1994, the first of 15 state appearances Powell would guide Darrington to. This weekend Powell is one of six coaches to be inducted into the Washington State Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. The 2012 class will be inducted prior to the championship match.
"I feel really honored but I'm a little surprised that I'm in that spot in my life and career," Powell said with a laugh. "It's humbling because I know who else has been honored in this sport."
Powell has been selected as Coach of the Year four times, has won four league titles, four district championships and has led the Loggers to seven state trophies. His career records is 402-210.
This year Darrington returns to the state tournament and is ranked No. 10 in the latest coaches poll. Most of this year's players are juniors and sophomores, which means the Loggers have a good chance to be even better next year.
The 2B state tournament is in the Yakima SunDome, just a few miles from where Powell grew up. "My mom and dad and sister will be there, so that will be special," said Powell, who also expects his daughter, Mandy, to make the trip.
Darrington plays Colfax in the first round of the 2B state volleyball tournament at the Yakima SunDome on Friday.
