Scrapbooking, taste test, music, more weekend fun

Get crafty: A convention for scrapbookers and paper crafters is Friday and Saturday in Bellevue. The event includes classes, exhibitions, vendors and a lot more. Click here to find all the details.

Give it a taste: Break out your tasting spoons for a Chili Chowder Cook Off. You’re the judge as you taste and vote for your favorite chili and all types of chowder. The event is from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Camano Center, 606 Arrowhead Road. Tickets are $10 for 10 tastes and beer and wine is available to buy. A free shuttle is available from the Utsalady Elementary School parking lot, 608 North Arrowhead Road. Click here for more information.

Get outside: This weekend, in honor of Veterans Day, entrance will be free to national parks, wildlife refuges and forest service and BLM lands. In short, that means most outdoor areas are free, except for state parks. Find a nice summation here.

For the kids: The Fresh Beat Band, a big hit with the preschool crowd, performs in Everett on Saturday. The Fresh Beat Band show teaches preschoolers about music appreciation, rhythm, melody, tempo and other musical themes while band members solve their current pressing problem. Be impressed: Seattle’s only heavy metal opera features choreographed fights between fully armed and armored knights and aerial acrobats all set to operatic heavy metal music. The show has just about everything: Vikings, a playful imp that keeps the audience laughing, and original music. Get in on the fun on Friday and Saturday in Everett. Also this weekend, The Sixth Day Dance Company will present a performance featuring dancers with developmental and physical disabilities on Saturday and Sunday in Everett. Co-founder Lyndee Breece said the goal is to raise awareness while featuring talented dancers and a beautiful story. Read more in our story here.

For orchid lovers: The Northwest Orchid Society fall sale is 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Swansons Nursery, 9701 15th Ave. NW, Seattle. You’ll find a free orchid display, repotting service for a fee, and hard-to-find orchids for sale by vendors, plus a talk on orchids at 10 a.m. Saturday. Volunteers will be on hand both days to answer orchid-related questions.
