Finally, place for cheap chow on Everett waterfront

Since my family moved to Everett a few years ago, we’ve been saying that there needs to be a place to pick up a cheap, good-tasting hot dog or burger on the waterfront.

Fisherman’s Market and Grill has finally filled that void.

Fisherman’s Market and Grill is not your typical restaurant. It’s more like a lunch counter within a store. Fisherman’s is in the back of Harbor Marine at the 10th Street Boat Launch. Harbor Marine offers boat repair, groceries and boating supplies.

The dining room is nice and clean and is really part of the store. Frankly, you would not really know there is a restaurant in the store if someone didn’t tell you where it is.

The Fisherman’s menu includes an eclectic offering of basics. Pizza, made with homemade dough, comes in a half-dozen different varieties ($14 to $25). They also offer pizza by the slice ($2.50 or $3.49). There are scrambles and omelets for breakfast ($4.99 to $7.49). The seafood offerings are mostly deep-fried, but there is a salmon burger available ($7.49 to $10.99).

Two of the sandwiches are turkey, Swiss and cranberry ($6.99), and roast beef and cheddar ($6.99).

The burgers are one of the unexpected delights.

My husband ordered the Skipper’s Choice with Swiss ($5.99) It’s a classic cheeseburger with your choice of cheese. Of course, I always have to taste what my husband orders. I was surprised that it tasted completely different than what I expected. I couldn’t place my finger on what was different and then I saw it:

The cooks were weighing and hand-forming the ground beef into patties in the kitchen. So duh!

What tasted different was that the patties are homemade, reminding me of those rare occasions when I make homemade hamburgers in the skillet.

Accompanying my order and my husband’s food were very crisp fries. Pretty average, but still tasty.

I ordered six jumbo prawns and chips ($8.99). The prawns were hand-dipped in a batter, though batter is not really accurate — it was more like crisp bread crumbs. Quite tasty. The prawns were perfectly cooked, nice and firm and fresh tasting. A not totally wrong way to satisfy my craving for something deep-fried.

My son ordered every kid’s favorite: a slice of cheese pizza ($2.49). The pizza is what they were calling New York pizza. I have never had New York pizza so I will have to take their word for it. The crust is the type of crust you fold in half and eat. Not too thick or too crisp.

I liked the amount of cheese on the pizza: just enough to make you full but not enough to slide off the pizza when you take a bite.

I would dare to say it is the best place to get a slice of pizza for lunch, far better than the options in the downtown core.

Another thing I really enjoyed about Fisherman’s Market and Grill is the art on the walls. The walls were filled with beautiful and interesting artwork by a local artist.

As I mentioned, Fisherman’s is in a boating supply store. In the dining area were lots of cookbooks on how to cook fish and cooking aboard a boat. This turned out to be a really fun way to spend the time waiting for my food.

Along with a new cookbook, you could buy a Jolly Roger flag for your boat so you can embrace your inner pirate. They have big flag selection next to the dining area.

I am so pleased that Fisherman’s Market and Grill has opened near the boat dock. This is just what Everett needs to counterbalance the high-end dining establishments on the waterfront.
