MONROE-- Kids and teens can become critics of their favorites books and maybe win a bicycle for their efforts.
As a way to encourage kids to read and write, the Sno-Isle Public Library in Monroe has started a "Bike for Books Contest."
Kids write a one-page review about their favorite or most recently read book and submit it to the library, at 1070 Village Way.
The big prizes are a bicycle for a boy and a girl. The bicycles were donated by the Sultan-Monroe Masonic Lodge No. 160.
Kids attending school up to 12th grade can participate. The only requirement is filling out an application, and submitting the review by the Nov. 30 deadline.
Library staff will choose the winners.
By reviewing the books, kids will get more understanding of the books, the characters and also get a chance to improve their writing, said Shannon Dye, librarian for the Monroe Public Library.
"This is something they will do in their future," Dye said.
Teens do not necessarily have advantage over younger kids, she said. The library is looking for reviews that are thoughtful and describe why the book was good or bad, Dye said.
Winners will get their prizes at a ceremony scheduled for Dec. 8.
This is the fourth year for the competition. Last year, there were 70 entries.
The Monroe library is unique in hosting the competition. The Sultan-Monroe Lodge is trying to expand the programs to other branches, member Jack Houston said.
For more information, call the library at 360-794-7851, ext. 4141.
