ARLINGTON -- Last year, school bus drivers and other employees with the Lakewood School District transportation department held a "Stuff the Bus" food drive.

They collected more than 4,000 pounds of food and filled a 40-foot school bus.

They'll try to better that this year.

The drivers as well as mechanics and dispatchers will park a bus at the Smokey Point Walmart, 4010 172nd St. NE, Arlington, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Last year, all of the about 30 employees of the department helped with the event, said Marlene Rosenbach, the district's transportation supervisor.

They came up with the idea after Rosenbach heard about a stuff-the-bus event in Arizona to gather school supplies. They thought the same effort could work here.

"We have so many local families that are really in need," Rosenbach said.

The drive collects food, but they also will take gift certificates. There's also a big need for diapers, formula and other baby food.

All donations will be given to the Arlington and Marysville food banks as well as to the Stillaguamish Senior Center.

For more information, call the transportation department at 360-652-4525.
