Carlile trial

Insensitive letters way off base

Regarding the Derek Carlile trial and the letters printed Wednesday ("Negligence merits punishment" and "Special treatment in this case?" Both writers expressed a wish to see Officer Carlile thrown in jail. I'm amazed at their lack of compassion. Seven years ago, my 14-year-old niece took her own life. The depth of grief suffered by my brother, his ex-wife and sons is indescribable, something I wouldn't wish on anyone.
These writers obviously have no idea what it's like to lose a child. The loss of a child, by whatever means, is by far the most hideous thing imaginable, a horror that never goes away and something my family will never recover from.
Incarcerating this man would be meaningless and absolutely cruel, he and his family are already living in hell.
