Youth soccer tourney comes to Everett this weekend

More than 1,000 young soccer players from around the state will gather in the Everett area this weekend for the annual Turkey Shoot tournament at several Snohomish County parks and schools.
The event has been going on for upwards of 25 years, tournament organizer Brock Bowyer said, and continues to draw large numbers of teams.
The tourney, he said, is "directed towards kids in rec ball, so they're not on select teams, traveling teams, or premier teams as it's called in soccer lingo. These are kids who play two or three months a year, and this is right after the end of the season for all of them."
The Turkey Shoot includes 105 boys and girls teams from U-8 to U-16 competing in games today, Saturday and Sunday, "and they'll be coming from all over the state," Bowyer said.
"It's open to anybody who wants to register, pay the fees, and come and play. We have a lot of repeat teams. A lot of teams come year after year after year."
Games will be held at Everett's Kasch Park and Lincoln Park, Everett Memorial Stadium, Mukilteo's Kamiak and Mariner high schools, and several middle schools in the area.
"This is a competitive, friendly tournament for kids of all ages," Bowyer said. "We try to make it very professional so these kids can get the full tournament experience."
Our goal, he added, "is to promote the sport, and friendship and good sportsmanship."
