Joyner's big year earns offer from Huskies

Austin Joyner may just be a sophomore, but his electrifying runs took Snohomish County and the rest of the state by storm this past season.

Joyner rushed for 2,036 yards this past season, averaged nearly 15 yards per carry and helped lead Marysville Pilchuck to the 3A state quarterfinals.

On Tuesday, the hard work paid off with an offer to play football at the University of Washington. Joyner attended the Huskies practice and afterward was offered a full athletic scholarship by the Huskies.

"Am I surprised he got an offer? No," Tomahawks head coach Brandon Carson said. "But I am surprised he got one this soon."

The Huskies are the first school to offer Joyner a scholarship.

"It says a lot," Carson said. "I think it says a lot about his ability and what they think of him."

Joyner has two more seasons with the Tomahawks before he has to make a decision, which undoubtedly will be more difficult to make by that time.

"I'm pretty sure it won't be the last offer," Carson said.

If Joyner keeps putting up numbers like he did in 2012, Carson will most certainly be right.

"He's a deserving kid," Carson said. "I think he has the skills that Division 1 schools are looking for."
