EDMONDS -- Main Street renovations in this city's popular downtown shopping and dining area could be complete this week, or at least during the next stretch of reasonably dry weather.
Mayor Dave Earling said the city was on track to finish the Main Street project before Thanksgiving until rainy weather slowed down the work.
"We were clear with the business owners from the start that the only thing slowing the project down would be the weather," Earling said.
Business owners were told they could expect the major overhaul of Main Street, between Fifth and Sixth avenues, to be finished before the Christmas shopping season got rolling.
The project wasn't done by Saturday's tree lighting ceremony, but people got an idea of what is in store.
The block is open again for vehicle traffic and parking is available now on the north side of the street.
"The street is looking very good," said Chamber of Commerce spokeswoman Ailsa Kellam. "It's so close to being finished and the chamber believes it is a major benefit to Edmonds businesses."
The final layer of asphalt needs to be put down, gaps in the sidewalk filled, trees planted and the light fixtures and flower basket poles finished off, Earling said.
"We want to get street parking opened up as soon as possible," Earling said. "And when it's all done, we'll have another big celebration."
