Naval Station Everett Commanding Officer Capt. Michael Coury (center) and Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson (second from left), along with representatives for Sen. Maria Cantwell, Sen. Murray, Rep. Rick Larson and Manson Construction, cut a ribbon for a new small craft launch dock at Naval Station Everett.
A new dock is in use at Naval Station Everett.
The single-lane small craft launch dock was designed specifically to ensure efficient operations for harbor security boats at the naval base.
The dock will allow for more effective responses to security threats, boat rescue missions, anti-terrorism efforts and other emergency events involving mutual aid, said base spokeswoman Kristin Ching.
The $2.5 million project was built by Manson Construction of Seattle, which also received $317,000 for construction of a compensatory mitigation project.
The mitigation project involved removal of a derelict pier and creosote-treated wood pilings at the former Everett Kimberly-Clark facility, thereby restoring near-shore aquatic habitat and improving water quality.
The new dock is not a public boat launch. Its location along Naval Station Everett's East Waterway improves the Navy's ability to support efforts by Coast Guard and Snohomish County emergency response teams. Access to the launch from the base means that Navy vessels can quickly mobilize in any given security or life-threatening condition, Navy officials said.
