State budget

Time to revamp our tax system

In the last gubernatorial campaign, both McKenna and Inslee were relatively quiet about the elephant in the room: The impending state budget deficit. I can understand why candidates would want to avoid revenue and taxes during an election season. The press and media did not press the issue either. Don't tell, don't ask.
Voters approved the charter school initiative. The state Supreme Court has ruled the state must adequately fund public education. Given that funding is allocated on a per student basis, where is the money coming from?
The sales tax is the most regressive of all taxes. The sales tax for necessities like laundry soap takes a much greater percentage of income from poor and working-class families than it does from the wealthy.
A solution would be to reduce the state's portion from 6 percent to 1 percent and to invoke a progressive income tax to replace it. This would keep local and regional sales tax the same and would result in a fairer tax system for all.
Since I'm addressing finances and economics, I'd appreciate seeing a listing in the paper of the major markets. Some of us have investments in our 401(k)s and IRAs besides Boeing.
