Injured UW volleyball star says she'll play Friday

SEATTLE -- With three days remaining before its NCAA tournament opener, the University of Washington volleyball team was optimistic Tuesday about having star sophomore Krista Vansant in the lineup.

"I think she will be able to, at least, go -- in some capacity," coach Jim McLaughlin said before Tuesday's practice. "I don't know whether or not she'll be 100 percent. But we've got to get on it early in the week just to see where she's at."

Vansant, an first-team All-Pac-12 outside hitter, sprained her left ankle during a Nov. 16 match against Oregon and was out of action for the final three matches of the regular season. She returned to practice Monday, when she worked on passing drills but did very little jumping.

Before Tuesday's practice, Vansant said she has no doubt that she'll be on the floor for Friday's NCAA tournament match against Central Arkansas at Hec Edmundson Pavilion.

"I want to play," she said. "I'll play through the pain if I have to."
