STANWOOD — The Stanwood boys basketball team came out sluggish in its season opener against rival Mount Vernon Tuesday night and trailed 11-10 after the first quarter.
Turns out all the Spartans needed was some Zipp.
Stanwood junior Ian Zipp scored eight points and created havoc on the defensive end off the bench midway through the second quarter to help the Spartans outscore Mount Vernon 17-7 to end the first half en route to a 82-55 win over the Bulldogs at Stanwood H.S.
“That’s exactly what we want from Ian,” said Stanwood head coach Zach Ward. “He’s so versatile and he’s a nice piece to have. We love having him come off the bench and be able to fill any position on the floor.”
Cannen Roberson and Josh Thayer each scored 20 points to lead all scorers, 6-foot-10 post Drew Sears added 14 — six points coming on three dunks — and Zipp had 13 for Stanwood. Besides playing strong defense, Thayer had four 3-pointers and took over the game at one point late in the third quarter, scoring 11 of Stanwood’s 13 points.
After grabbing a double-digit lead going into halftime, Stanwood put the game out of reach in the third quarter. The Spartans opened the second half on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a Sears dunk, and outscored Mount Vernon 32-11 in the third quarter to seal their first victory of the season.
