Gale Fiege's article in the Sunday Herald about the Indian photographer Matika Wilbur and Edward Curtis brought back memories. (
526 tribes, one photographer). In 1963 I was working at the Salvation Army store in Lake City. Edward Curtis' daughter came in searching for her father's original photos. She was thrilled to find a 4X5 framed photo in perfect condition. I have a National Geographic book of his photos, "Edward Curtis: Coming to Light" by Anne Makepeace.
I grew up near the Sioux Reservation in Fort Totten, North Dakota, and have always been interested in Native American cultures.
I also have a book of Seattle photos by Edward Curtis' brother, Asahel. They were
not friends, but that's another story.
Thank you for an excellent local paper.
