CLINTON — A suspected bank robber apparently reported a fake homicide to distract the police before a holdup Wednesday night in Clinton.
Just after 5 p.m. Wednesday, a man called 911 and said he had just killed someone near Smuggler Cove Road in Greenbank, according to Island County sheriff’s detective Ed Wallace.
Detectives were checking on the call when a man wearing a white cloth mask walked into the Clinton Wells Fargo Bank, about 15 miles away, Wallace said.
The man threatened the teller, demanded cash and fled. He may have left in a red mid-size sport utility vehicle, possibly a Saturn Vue or something similar.
The homicide report was found to be false, Wallace said.
The suspect was described as white, about 6-foot and 200 pounds. In addition to the mask, he wore a dark hoodie-style sweatshirt. No weapon was displayed.
