VANCOUVER — Kurtis Hushagen, Drew Sears and Ian Zipp all scored in double-digits for Stanwood, but an outburst by Union from behind the arc turned out to be too much as the Spartans fell to the Titans 81-74 in a nonleague game played at Union H.S. on Friday night.
Union managed to make 10 of its 22 attempts from beyond the 3-point line. Tyler Copp managed to hit four 3-pointers to go along with his 27 points on the night.
“(Union’s) style of play is to spread out the floor, penetrate and kick it out,” said Stanwood head coach Zach Ward. “They had some open looks, but we contested a lot of their shots. Credit to them for knocking almost half of them down.”
Ward was sure to credit the play of senior guard Kurtis Hushagen, who scored 16 points off the bench for the Spartans.
“Kurtis was great off the bench,” said Ward. “He plays really aggressive and he’s just a good, high energy guy.”
The Spartans knew going in that Union would be a touch matchup. Union won a 3A state championship in 2010.
“We knew playing (Union) was going to be a test for us,” said Ward. “Playing the state champs from two years ago was a great challenge for us. We played well, but not perfect. It was a unique atmosphere for us to go down there and travel four hours to a place we’ve never been. We just have to bounce back tomorrow against Mountain View.”
