Nov. 20 was a furlough day for the Edmonds School District. While many students slept in, Lynnwood High School's brand new TriM Club (Music Honor Society) led by club President, Hanna Moore, held a food drive to support the Lynnwood Food Bank. Fifty-five students, four parents and two teachers volunteered 212 hours on their day off. By standing outside of local grocery stores, asking for donations, they collected 9,500 cans of food for their community. Students also collected over 900 diapers and hundreds of personal care items (toothpaste, deodorant, hundreds of rolls of toilet paper, soap and more) which will be used for LHS's Adopt-A-Family drive in December.
Special thanks to the Albertson's in Mill Creek and James Village, Mill Creek QFC and Alderwood Fred Meyer for supporting this event. Additionally, the event would not have been successful without the support of every shopper who came through and donated a single can or coin, or much more.
That day I brought a few perishable items to the food bank directly. It was very clear what a great need there is for these donations in our community. In the very long line I saw mostly what appeared to be very "normal" people, families and young children. It was really overwhelming to see what a group of high schoolers can do in a single day with a little support from a lot of people. Bravo to these civic minded music students!
