EDMONDS -- Jackson junior Jason Todd scored 31 points and the Timberwolves held off an Edmonds-Woodway's second-half run to win the Wesco 4A South league opener on Friday night.
"Todd scored from everywhere," said Edmonds-Woodway head coach Steve Call. "He was by far the best player on the court. We tried everything defensively and we played a little better (on him) in the second half, but he still scored 14 points."
After trailing by 12 at the half, the Warriors outscored Jackson 17-8 in the third quarter to get back in the game. Call credited the comeback to a switch to a zone defense.
"We started to get tips and deflections, which led to steals and transition offense," said Call.
Edmonds-Woodway actually held a three-point advantage with two minutes to play and was still up by one with a minute left, but a couple of turnovers allowed the T-wolves to retake the lead on a Todd layup. Dan Kingma hit two free throws with 6 seconds left to seal the win.
Jason Smarr led Edmonds-Woodway with 11 and also had seven rebounds. The Warriors had a balanced scoring attack with five players scoring between six and 11 points which pleased their coach.
"Our goal is balance on offense," said Call. "I'm fine with all scorers being under 10 points."
