12-12-12 is full of surprises for twins turning 12

EVERETT — Twins Jared and GiGi Boscacci expected to go out to breakfast on their birthday.

The 12-year-olds on Wednesday morning didn’t know all the surprises that were part of the meal.

GiGi pointed to a sign on the wall that read, “Totem Dining is excited to celebrate Jared and GiGi turning 12 today. 12-12-12!” A table was decorated with green and pink balloons and streamers. Minutes after sitting down at Table 12, GiGi’s friend Shielle Kussman walked through the door. She smiled and excitedly called out her friend’s name.

“We’re turning 12 on 12-12-12 and all our friends are here,” GiGi said. “I didn’t know all this would be here.”

The twins’ 12th birthday falls on the last time in this century that the day, month and year will all match.

“It’s really cool,” Jared said.

Their mother, Lisa Boscacci, said her family has frequented the restaurant since 2004, when they moved to Everett. Jared and GiGi, who are sixth-graders at Northshore Christian Academy, requested to celebrate part of their once-in-a-lifetime birthday by eating at the restaurant.

“Their favorite place to eat is Totem,” Lisa Boscacci said. “We don’t always have their party on the day, but today I knew we had to.”

Jared ordered cranberry juice while GiGi decided she would have orange juice. They both wanted the cinnamon roll French toast. The preteens showed off their first cellphones, presents from their parents that they had received before coming to the restaurant.

“We asked for them, but we didn’t think we would get them because we were all done with our presents,” Jared said. “Then the phones started ringing and we didn’t know what it was and we were looking all around. My mom told us to look under the table. I was freaking out.”

For gifts for each other, she picked out a play sword for her brother while he gave her a slushy machine, GiGi said. After school, they planned to go to Spin Alley Bowling Center in Shoreline for a family party.

The twins’ due date was originally Christmas, Lisa Boscacci said. After they were born on the morning of Dec. 12, 2000, she and her husband, Joe, talked about the numerical coincidence, she added.

“We talked about them turning 12 on 12-12-12 then, but it seemed like eons away,” Lisa said.

Jared and GiGi thanked restaurant owner Steve Jermyn before heading outside to take camera-phone pictures of the diner’s reader board message, which included their names. Jermyn and his wife, Alicia, have owned the restaurant, which originally opened in 1953, for about a year. He was happy to help make the twins’ birthday a memorable one.

“This is a big deal,” he said. “It’s awesome.”
