Front Porch: Police DUI emphasis patrols
One of those, the "Night of 1,000 Stars" patrol, is planned this weekend in Snohomish County.
A large mobile vehicle used for processing drunken driving arrests will be parked at the former Top Foods parking lot in south Everett as part of the patrol.
Free holiday event: Wintertide, a free community celebration to ring in the season, is planned from 4 to 7 p.m. tonight at the Everett Performing Arts Center Plaza, 2710 Wetmore Ave., in downtown Everett.
For the first two hours, the event features children's holiday craft projects and face painting, a memories photo booth and free hot apple cider, cocoa and cookies. Santa is scheduled to arrive at 6 p.m. At the same time, there will be a tree lighting and caroling as well as a bonfire in the plaza.
There will also be a special showing at 6:30 p.m. of the 1966 animated classic "How the Grinch Stole Christmas."
People can drop off new, unwrapped toys for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program.

See new buses, help food bank: Bus drivers and other staff members from the Mukilteo School District will take donations for the Mukilteo Food Bank from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot of the Albertson's store at Beverly Park Road and the Mukilteo Speedway.
A recently purchased school bus will be on hand at the event so members of the community can get a look at the kind of vehicles that will be purchased with funds from a recently approved transportation levy.
The levy, which was approved by nearly 60 percent of voters last month, will raise $3 million in 2013, which will be used to purchase about 30 new school buses during the next several years.
