Semantic change sheer lunacy

I read in the news last week that Congress, with nothing better to think about, voted to strike the word "lunatic" from all federal laws, ostensibly because it lacked compassion toward those of us who are emotionally challenged.
They were, however, comfortable with leaving the word "idiot" on the books, perhaps because there was so many of them in the room at the time of the vote.
