PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Everett Silvertips got into a special teams battle with the Portland Winterhawks on Friday night, and the Tips couldn't keep up.
Portland struck early and often on the power play as the Winterhawks knocked off the Tips 4-2.
In a penalty-filled game that featured 15 power plays, Portland scored on three of its first four chances with the advantage to build a 3-0 lead. Everett received its share of power plays as well, including a pair of lengthy five-on-threes, but the Tips couldn't match Portland's proficiency. Portland finished the game 3 for 8 on the power play, while Everett finished 1 for 7.
Brendan Leipsic, Adam De Champlain, Nicolas Petan and Taylor Leier scored for Portland (26-5-1-0), which continued its mastery over Everett at home. The Winterhawks have won 14 straight games against the Tips in Portland, dating back to January of 2010. Brendan Burke earned the win in goal with 24 saves.
Landon Oslanski scored both goals for Everett (13-21-0-2). Austin Lotz stopped 22 of 26 shots in goal for Everett through two periods. Daniel Cotton turned aside all 12 shots he faced in the third.
The same two teams meet Sunday in Everett, the final game before the Christmas break for both teams.
Everett took two penalties in the first four minutes, and Portland cashed in both times to take an early 2-0 lead. Leipsic scored on a back-door feed from Leier a mere 1 minute, 46 seconds in, and De Champlain put a shot past Lotz at 5:06. Everett had a lengthy five-on-three later in the period, but couldn't convert as the Winterhawks maintained their 2-0 lead.
Portland scored yet another power-play goal 2:43 into the second period, Petan scoring after a goal-mouth scramble to make it 3-0.
Everett got a power-play goal of its own at 9:48, Oslanski scoring on a wrister from the top of the circle during a five-on-three advantage at 9:48.
But Portland quickly restored its three-goal lead. Leier scored past Lotz at 12:42 to make it 4-1.
Everett never really threatened in the third period, and Oslanski's second goal of the game, a slap shot from the point just as a power-play expired, came with 1:59 remaining.
