Prep girls basketball: Glacier Peak 40, Shorewood 36
Shtikel scored 11 fourth-quarter points as the Thunderbirds outscored the Grizzlies 11-4 in the quarter.
"We were just holding our breath," said Glacier Peak head coach Brian Hill. "Masha decided to kind of take over herself. ... She tried to take control of the game. She drove strong and finished well."
Hill had Sadie Mensing defending Shtikel for the entire game. Mensing held Shtikel to four points in the first half, five in the third quarter, and under her average of 22, said Hill.
"I told (Mensing) to stick to her like glue. She did a good job."
Shtikel got open in the fourth quarter by running off screens and trying to create a little offense on her own, said Hill.
On offense for the Grizzlies, Allie Weathersby nearly matched Shtikel's 20 points, scoring 18.
Hill says Weathersby can play post and wing and is tough to guard.
"If they go big on her, we go outside. If they go small we get in on the inside. (Weathersby) did a good job of dictating control of our offense today," said Hill.
Overall it was a hard-fought game, and Glacier Peak was able to execute.
"We kind of had a game plan going in. Defense. ... Try to hold them under 40," said Hill. "We got a chance and we were able to do do that."
