But the Knights 400-yard freestyle relay team managed to hold off the Thunderbirds by five one-hundredths of a second to escape with a one-point victory and extend Kamiak's winning streak to 66 meets.
"It was so close that we thought we won, but we weren't sure," said Kamiak head coach Chris Erickson. "These close meets don't help (our streak), they give the other teams ideas.
Behind by a point coming into the relay, Kamiak needed a win and a win only to extend the streak. Erickson went with Daniel Carey, Shelby Lee, Henry Limm, and Andrew Lewis. Despite suffering from a lung infection which caused him to pull out of the 500 freestyle, Carey swam the first leg at 52.61 seconds, a personal best. Still, Anders Blomso got the T-birds out to a lead with a leg of 50.40. Lee and Limm regained the lead for the Knights with sub-50-second times to give Lewis some breathing room. Shorecrest's Galen Kinter caught up to the Kamiak senior and with 12 yards to go actually "went ahead 6-8 inches," according to Erickson. Lewis quickly pulled even and went back ahead by the flag. Erickson credited the win to Lewis' arms and his sense to not make a normal mistake at the end.
"He has long arms and it came down to the length of his arms," said Erickson, before adding, "It's a common error to try and take an extra stroke at the finish when there's simply no room to do so. Andrew did not and he made the correct call for reaching."
Overall, the two teams combined to record 14 state-qualifying times. Kamiak's John Stupey and Shorewood's Andrew Garrison had three apiece. Stupey earned victories in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, while also swimming a leg in the 200 medley relay. Garrison swam the anchor in the T-birds 200 freestyle relay team and won the 50 and 100 freestyle events. Eben Schumann of the Knights also turned in three state-qualifying times with second-places finishes in the 50 and 100 freestyle and anchored the 200 medley relay.
