Applications are being accepted from people interested in being appointed to serve as a judge in the South Division of Snohomish County District Court.
The person selected will assume the judge’s job now held by Tim Ryan. He said he will retire at the end of the month.
Ryan, 65, had served on the District Court bench for two decades. He raised public ire for avoiding charges after a drunken-driving arrest last summer. Ryan refused to participate in sobriety testing. King County prosecutors later determined there was insufficient evidence to bring a case against him.
The County Council will decide who will replace Ryan. The person selected will fill the position under the general election in November 2013.
Under state law, applicants must be attorneys admitted to practice law in Washington. They also must be registered to vote within the boundaries of the South Division District Court.
Applications will be accepted by the county council until Jan. 8. Interviews with the top candidates will be scheduled Jan. 18 and council vote on the appointment expected Jan. 23.
The schedule is designed to allow the newly appointed judge time to attend judicial college training, which is scheduled to begin Jan. 27.
