LA CONNER -- La Conner led by three at the half by outrebounding Darrington, but by flipping that stat around and turning up their defense, the Loggers were able to prove that they're one of the teams to beat in the Northwest 1A/2B.

"(In the second half) the things that turned it around were lots of turnovers and our rebounding," said Darrington head coach Jeff Anderson. "(In the first half La Conner) kept getting second and third chances."

Then Darrington switched tactics and began playing "A little more intense defense. We were straight up man-to-man in the second half," said Anderson.

On offense, Amy Miles and Monica Franke led the way for the loggers.

"Amy handled the ball really well, took open shots and had a lot of steals. Franke just worked the boards. She was a force underneath," said Anderson.

"(Casandra) Cousins knocked down four free throws at the end of the fourth quarter to seal it for us."

To Anderson, the Loggers' 9-1 start is not a surprise. He expected to do well against the smaller schools on the team's nonleague schedule and thought his girls had the talent to win tough league games.

"I expected it out of our girls this year," Anderson said. "La Conner and us match up real well league-wise. I knew tonight would be a tough game. ... The girls are tough."
