Seems Like Yesterday

Sign up for Weekend to-do list
50 years ago (1962)

Christmas Day 1962 would be long remembered by Mrs. Friedl Schmidt of 5022 View Drive. At 2 a.m., she placed a telephone call to her parents in Plauen, East Germany. The call was a perfect beginning for the holiday.

A "White Christmas" theme was chosen for the annual Everett District CYO Christmas Ball at the Elks ballroom. Committee members making plans were Kathy Reilly, decorations; Anne Goerl, decorations chair, Louis Stevenson, Everett District president; Dick Bold, ticket chair, and Larry DeCelle, refreshment chair.

Several bell ringers were out for the holiday shopping season. One was Thomas Guinn, and neither snow nor rain nor even the "grumps" kept him from his fund-raising task for Snohomish County's Volunteers of America operation. His chimney was outside Sears at the Everett Mall.

Stevens Pass was selling a new ski run this winter that left peoples' hearts pounding and legs aching. Skiers were giving high marks to the hundreds of acres of trails, faces, bowls and jumps in the new Mill Valley area, just up and over from the existing Big Chief chairlift at Stevens Pass.
