EDMONDS -- Four people escaped a fire that destroyed a home in Edmonds early Wednesday morning.

A couple, their adult son and a house guest were asleep when a smoke alarm sounded and alerted them to the fire just before 3 a.m., Snohomish County Fire District 1 spokeswoman Leslie Hynes said.

The single-story house in the 20000 block of 81st Avenue W was in flames when firefighters arrived, Hynes said.

The family escaped with a dog and a cat, but another dog died in the fire.

Firefighters from District 1 and Lynnwood had the blaze under control within 25 minutes.

No people were injured.

Investigators couldn't pinpoint the exact cause of the fire, but it apparently started in the living room near the Christmas tree, Hynes said.

The homeowner and the family that rents the house have insurance. Support 7 and the Snohomish County Chapter of the Red Cross are providing assistance.

The preliminary loss estimate is $250,000.

"A house fire at this time of the morning when everyone is asleep could very easily have resulted in a loss of life, but the smoke alarms did their job. They alerted the occupants in time so they could make a safe escape," Hynes said.
