Contractor picked to replace Hwy. 9 bridge
Bids to replace the one-lane, 96-year-old Pilchuck Creek bridge on Highway 9 north of Arlington came in below construction estimates. There were 12 bids.
The state Department of Transportation awarded the contract to Granite Construction, the lowest bidder, for $8.9 million to build the wider bridge.
The state had estimated that a new two-lane bridge would cost about $12.2 million.
Today, yield signs let drivers take turns crossing the 17-foot-wide bridge. Construction is scheduled to begin after the fish migration period in 2013. The 36-foot-wide replacement bridge is expected to open to traffic in 2014.
Lake Stevens: Free smoke alarms
Snohomish County Fire District 8 in Lake Stevens recently was awarded a grant to fund home-safety surveys and install smoke alarms in the community.
The "Vision 20/20" grant will cover the installation of 200 smoke alarms and 20 hearing-impared smoke alarms, department public educator Jennye Cooper said.
The safety surveys will include testing smoke alarms already in the home, identifying potential fire hazards and helping families make escape plans.
