They scored just 13 points the rest of the way in a 38-25 loss.
"They executed, we didn't. Bottom line," Monroe coach Matt Chalfant said. "We had our opportunities. We had good looks. We just have to step up to the plate. We need someone to step up and knock down the shots."
In the first quarter Monroe senior guard Breezy Shore provided that scoring for the Bearcats. She knocked down two 3s in the quarter and scored seven of her team's 12 points.
But that was the Bearcats most explosive quarter of the game.
"I know that in our offense and in our transition we were getting looks," Chalfant said. "I told the girls in a few of the timeouts, 'You've got the shot, you've got the green light, you just got to make them.' Tonight they weren't falling and when that happens you are going to score 13 points in three quarters."
The Bearcats' defensive struggles in the second half and the team's lack of production on the offensive end turned out to be a recipe for disaster for Monroe, which fell to 3-5 on the season.
"There was a few (shots) down here where we had a guard with a wide-open shot in the corner and she just kind of looked at it and passed it away," Chalfant said. "So I told them in a timeout, I said, 'Look, I will never get mad at you for missing a shot, but I will get upset if you turn down open looks.' That's something where our confidence has to start growing."
Lake City had two players that gave Monroe troubles: guard Hailey Jackson with her outside shooting and post Madi Farrell proved to be too much for the Bearcats inside.
"She (Jackson) is a good shooter," Chalfant said. "We came out in our zone defense in the beginning. They (Lake City) struggled with it a little bit, but they started getting looks for her and that forced us out of it. She's a good shooter and we recognized that so we had to go man-to-man and that's when they started going to the post."
The inside game proved just as potent as the outside game. Farrell scored 15 points, most of which came in the second half to help put Monroe away.
"In the second half they got some looks inside in the post, our backside help wasn't there, we didn't rotate," Chalfant said. "(Farrell) was the difference maker."
