KIRKLAND – The Everett girls basketball team didn't score a fourth-quarter point until there were 10 seconds left in the game in Thursday's game against Hazen at the 2012 Rebel Challenge Series.
But they scored enough in the other 31 minutes, 50 seconds of the game that it didn't matter.
The Seagulls used a stout defensive effort and impressive performances by sisters Darian and Sidney Rielly to defeat the Highlanders 60-17.
The Seagulls forced a number of first-half turnovers that they turned directly into points to build a 20-2 advantage after one quarter and a 40-8 advantage at halftime.
"We try to focus on our defense and generate a lot of our offense off of our defense," Everett head coach John Low said. "So that's always an emphasis of us going into the game is to try to generate our offense early on with our defense.
Many of those points came from the Rielly sisters. Darian Rielly scored 14 of her 18 points and older sister Sidney had 10 of her 19 in the first half.
Darian scored 10 points in the first quarter giving her team a lift after Sidney was hurt early in the game.
"They are definitely special players that work hard," Low said. "A lot of times they do it quiet, but tonight with Sidney kind of getting knocked down early and coming out of the game for a couple of minutes, Darian kind of got us going.
"They are definitely nice to have them on our side and not going against us."
