Prep wrestling: Lake Stevens at The Clash XI

ROCHESTER, Minn. — The Lake Stevens wrestling team won two of three matches on the first day of The Clash XI tournament but still felt unsatisfied with the result.

“We’re disappointed we didn’t represent the state of Washington better,” said Vikings coach Brent Barnes.

The Clash XI field features 32 teams from around the country and nearly all are ranked in their respective states. Lake Stevens lost its first match to Collins Hill, the No. 1 6A team in Georgia, 42-33. The defeat largely dictated the Vikings path for the rest of the tournament.

“It’s one of those things, if you lose the first one the highest you can place (in the bracket) is fifth,” said Barnes. “We started out slow, we could’ve been more competitive (against Collins Hill), just didn’t wrestle well.”

But Lake Stevens bounced back to earn that fifth place finish, posting lopsided wins against Kimball Area (Minnesota) and Port Washington (Wisconsin).

Barnes singled out four Vikings’ wrestlers who he thought performed well. Freshman Jake Douglas, wrestling at 120 and 126 pounds had three pins. At 170 pounds, Logan Johnson also pinned all three of his opponents, with two of the falls coming inside of a minute. His brother, Brandon Johnson, went undefeated with two pins and a forfeit victory in the heavyweight class. And Cody Vigoren won three times at 182 pounds.

“Vigoren stepped up big today,” said Barnes. “He looked really good.”

Lake Stevens concludes the tournament Saturday with three more matches against the three teams that finished fifth in their respective brackets.
