Joshua Winquist scored both Everett goals, including the game winner on a breakaway in overtime, and Austin Lotz played a strong game in goal as the Tips beat Seattle for the second time in two nights, both by 2-1 scorelines.
Everett took the lead midway through the second period and held it until the final five minutes of regulation, when a dangerous pass by Trent Lofthouse was picked off, leading to the tying goal for Seattle. But the Tips survived the rest of regulation to secure their point, then won it in OT when Nick Walters sprung Winquist free, and Winquist beat Seattle goalie Brandon Glover 5-hole.
This was just the start the Tips needed to begin the second half. Everett couldn't buy a win against the U.S. Division in the first half, including going 0-4 against the T-birds. But by making up three points on Seattle, the Tips are now within three of the T-birds, though Seattle has two games in hand.
As for Lotz, he was rock solid tonight, maybe as solid as I've seen him all season. He was reportedly equally as good, if not better, Friday in Kent. If Lotz can get over that hump and settle in as the No. 1, that's big news for the Tips.
Lotz was aided by a lot of blocked shots, with his defensemen in particular doing a good job preventing Seattle from getting clean looks.
Y'know, I'm going to say the turning point came when that guy in the stands decided, with six minutes remaining in regulation and Everett clinging to a 1-0 lead, that it was a good time to try and start the wave. Dude, it's in the balance, so sit down and watch the game. Oh, and Seattle tied it moments later.
First star: Winquist. Two goals, including the winner, and also smacked the post.
Second star: Lotz. 34 saves, held his ground and didn't give up rebounds.
Third star: Glover. 28 saves, did everything he could do to keep Seattle in it.
The Herald's honorable mention: Manraj Hayer, Everett. One assist, played with reckless abandon.
Everett 2, Seattle 1 (OT)
