SPOKANE -- A suspected car thief ran from police and jumped into the Spokane River to evade capture on Tuesday.

The Spokesman-Review reported he jumped right back out and into the waiting arms of police after a few about three minutes in the icy water.

The 22-year-old was taken into custody and transported to a Spokane hospital by ambulance for treatment of hypothermia. Police say they plan to book him into jail later.

His arrest came after officers pursued a stolen Acura SUV from northwest Spokane to the banks of the Spokane River.
