Ahead by 15 at halftime, Jackson hit all 21 of its free-throw attempts in the second half to bury the Vikings under a deluge of one-pointers. Lake Stevens, behind the hot shooting of Dakota Tomson, narrowed the Timberwolves' lead to 11 four times and 10 three other times in the second half but could never get closer because of the charity stripe onslaught.
"We emphasize that and it's one of the key stats in any ballgame," said Jackson coach Steve Johnson of the free throw shooting by his team, which finished 28-of-31 for the game from the line. "If you can get to the rim and get he ball inside and get to the free throw line and obviously if you're making them it makes it that much more affective."
One Jackson player in particular was cold-blooded from the line. Brian Zehr finished 12-of-13 from the free-throw line, including 10-for-10 in the second half, and had 23 points for Jackson. Dan Kingma, who hit three 3-pointers, and Jason Todd, who finished with 11 rebounds, each added 23 points as well.
In its first game back from holiday break, Lake Stevens came out fast, outscoring Jackson 14-12 behind 10 points from Devin Stoen. But the Timberwolves clamped down on the defensive end, blocking a shot and creating three straight turnovers in a 10-0 run to take a 22-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Timberwolves wouldn't look back as Todd took over in the second quarter. The 6-foot-4 junior scored 10 points in the period as Jackson outscored Lake Stevens 18-11 to grab a 15-point halftime lead.
