MOUNT VERNON -- Travis Bakken of Edmonds-Woodway made two key blocks in the final two minutes to allow the Warriors boys basketball team to overcome a six-point deficit, and a last-second basket by Jason Smarr secured the victory to give the Warriors second place in the Wesco 4A South.
In addition to the blocks -- he had five total -- Bakken scored 22 points in the first half on his way to 25 and had a double-double with 14 rebounds.
Smarr also had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds along with the game-winning shot, which came in the final second of play after Mount Vernon tied the game with 9 seconds to go.
"They shot really well in the second half," said Edmonds-Woodway coach Steve Call
Kevin Hofstad had 19 points and three 3-pointers for the Bulldogs, who scored 24 points in the third quarter.
"It was a (Mount Vernon) home crowd, there was great intensity, it was a good environment," said Call.
Going in to Mount Vernon, Call knew he had to prepare for the Bulldogs' size.
"They are very big... across all positions. We knew they were really strong inside. We focused on defense in the interior," said Call.
"We knew we were going to give up some threes."
They did. Mount Vernon had a total of nine 3-pointers.
"It worked out for us," Call said.
