50 years ago (1963)
Laurin Ajer, Patty Soley and Susan Tackstrom, third graders in Dorothy Woodward's class at Jackson School, were using Cuisenaire rods in their classroom as part of the new math program in Everett schools.
Third graders also were learning more about their city. The children were finding out answers to questions such as, "Why is there a jog in major north-south streets?" They also were learning about Everett's first schools.
25 years ago (1988)
A war memorial was being planned for outside City Hall honoring those who died in World Wars I and II, and in the Korean and Vietnam wars. City staffers had been poring over records for the past six months compiling names of the dead. Mayor Bill Moore wanted public input to ensure no names were missed.
Stephen Holt was elected mayor of Snohomish by a unanimous vote. Holt was appointed to the City Council in 1983 and elected to office in 1985. He had been executive director of the Housing Authority of Snohomish County for 10 years. Holt succeeded Ann Averill as mayor.
