Violence woven into every aspect

We all abhor the violence that has woven itself into our daily lives. Our malls, theaters, streets, and schools bleed with it. We shelter children from the truth because we don't want to scare them. Meanwhile, we do little beyond offering platitudes. Other communities, schools, and families face it but never us. Deep down we know that is a lie. Violence is big business and it is all around us- television, newspapers, video games, movies, and music.
Tonight while waiting for a movie to start, previews ran for one violent movie after another. The final straw was the marketing of video games with killing as entertainment. The entire theater sat there watching in silence. I do not attend movies or purchase games with gratuitous violence but sit passively by while others profit from our culture's nonchalance about brutality. We wait for big business to have the decency to stop pushing violence in their own time, showing even a shred of respect or remorse. We all know that is never going to happen without serious action from the public.
After the movie I told the manager of the AMC Loews Alderwood Mall 16 that I was irate about advertisements for violent video games. I told him it was time for them to stop using that time to market violence. I understand that it was a very small gesture. There is so much more to do. Let's start somewhere and take a stand against gratuitous violence. We owe it to our children.
