Guns

We can't disarm the already armed

I have many friends who have more guns than need or reason requires. They may be feeding a fantasy about being a vigilante or having to fight the government, or they may just like cool-looking loud toys or have a rational concern for home defense. But whatever their reasons, I would never put them in a steel cage for it, even for a single day. We may rightly argue that we shouldn't need to be armed to the teeth, but we already are. No one I know would give up their guns no matter the risk of jail.
It's something like the pot laws. You may argue that something shouldn't be done, but the real question becomes to jail or not. "Stop the madness" sounds right. But "Jail people who have big clips" doesn't. As a practical matter, we may be truly helpless to unscramble this particular egg.
