Electric vehicles

Road use fee very reasonable

SHARE: facebook Twitter icon Linkedin icon Google+ icon Email icon |  PRINTER-FRIENDLY
Is it unreasonable for the state to impose the proposed $100 fee on electric vehicle owners? (Dec. 24 article, "Owners of electric cars to pay road use fee.")
These vehicles use less gas fuel, but they are still using the roads, and roads require maintenance. Let's do the math.
Divide the .37 cents per gallon gas tax into $100, and you get 270.27 gallons of gas. Divide that by 12, you get roughly 22.5 gallons a month. That's equivalent to about half what the average driver buys. The electric car owner is getting a good deal. I think it's fair. All users must pay for maintenance. By extension, imagine if everyone drove an electric vehicle, the current gas tax system of rates would not be adequate.
