ARLINGTON — It’s not often that a basketball coach is apprehensive after his team hits five 3-pointers to build a nice lead early in a game.
But count Arlington’s Nick Brown among that group.
The Eagles hit five 3s early to take a 17-10 lead and then worked their offense late in a 64-47 win over Edmonds-Woodway in a Wesco 4A crossover game Thursday night at Arlington H.S.
“Often times you hit those shots early and then they’re not falling later in the game and that concerned me a little bit,” Brown said. “But we did a real good job of running our offense in the second half to come out with the win.”
Another reason for the win was Arlington’s intensity on the defensive side of the ball. The Eagles, especially Bradey Brummel on Edmonds-Woodway’s lightning quick guard Devin Joseph, played in-your-face defense all night and held the Warriors to just 19 combined points in the second and third quarters to build their lead from three to 19 points.
“We knew we had to limit Joseph because he can hurt you,” Brown said of the E-W guard, who scored 30 on the Eagles a year ago. “Bradey did a real good job on him.”
Arlington’s Terry Dawn, who also had five steals in the first quarter, and Noah Jones led all scorers with 14 points apiece. Kaleb Bryson (12 points) and AJ Passalaqua (11) each hit three 3-pointers for the Eagles, who travel to unbeaten Jackson tonight.
Alex Hull led Edmonds-Woodway with 10 points, eight of them coming in the fourth quarter.
