Here is a statement released from general manager and part owner Adrian Hanauer:
"We are finalizing the loan of Fredy Montero to Millonarios of Colombia for the 2013 MLS season. We hope to have this transaction completed in the next few days. Fredy has been a tremendous part of our success the last four years and this decision was not taken lightly. This was a process that Fredy and the Sounders cooperated on, and our hope is that it works out successfully for both parties."
The club said it would have no further statement until the deal is complete.
The deal could benefit the Sounders by creating salary cap space and a designated player opening on the roster.
Also Thursday, supporters groups of the Sounders, Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps issued a joint statement opposing MLS efforts to claim ownership of the "Cascadia Cup" trademark.
Emerald City Supporters, Timbers Army and Vancouver Southsiders said they have formed a Cascadia Cup Council that will seek trademark registration for the Northwest competition, which was created by the fans and predates any of the clubs' entry into MLS.
The league said it is making the move to protect the trademark from outside parties. MLS also said it will discuss the issue with the supporters groups.
In other MLS news, the league announced that its 2013 All-Star Game will be played July 31 at Livestrong Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan. The MLS all-stars will play against an international club to be named later.
