Prep girls basketball: Monroe 43, Edmonds-Woodway 40 (OT)
Although the Bearcats did not have a single scorer in double figures, Bearcats head coach Matt Chalfant singled out several players for their performances.
"Kylie Smith provided great senior leadership," Chalfant said. "She led us in scoring, played a ton and was so encouraging. She wouldn't let her teammates give up."
With Smith leading the offense, Deidra Miller controlled the glass, particularly during the game's final two periods.
"In the fourth quarter and overtime she was an absolute monster the boards, both offensive and defensive," said Chalfant. "She really did a fantastic job of outworking her opponent."
Kylee Ferreira also made a critical play in Chalfant's eyes. The sophomore guard "changed momentum" with a 3-pointer late in the third quarter to cut the Warriors' lead to four.
The Bearcats used that momemtum to rally in the fourth quarter and held a three-point lead with 30 seconds left in the game. But the Warriors' Natalie Kasper, who had a game-high 17 points, made a jumper, was fouled and completed the 3-point play to tie the score. After Edmonds-Woodway got a stop, the Warriors called timeout with four seconds left.
On the ensuing play, Edmonds-Woodway got the ball into the post, but Miller defended well to force a missed shot that ended regulation.
In overtime, the Bearcats built a six-point lead with 15 seconds left. Kasper made her fourth 3-pointer of the night to cut the lead to three with 12 seconds to play, but Monroe was able to run out the clock to close out the game.
