Prep boys basketball: Lake Stevens 52, Mariner 51 (2 OT)
The matchups between the Vikings' Dakota Tomson and Mariner's Kiante Ahmad-Woods and Stoen and Bayek Tutlam both factored heavily in the game along with 14 rebounds and late-game offensive production from Moussa Sanoh.
"Our two best were guarding their two best," said Lake Stevens head coach Mark Hein. "We had faith in Dakota on Ahmad-Woods and Devin on Tutlam."
Both Stoen and Tomson were playing through illness, but it clearly didn't stop Stoen from making the game-winning basket after two overtimes.
On defense Stoen managed to contain Tutlam well for the first half, according to Hein, but lost him a bit in the second half and beyond. Tutlam ended up with 16 points -- the same as Stoen -- one reason the game was so close.
"In crunch time, (Tutlam) made four dagger threes throughout the second half and overtime," said Hein.
Dakota Tomson scored 16 as well and managed to hold Ahmad-Woods to 11. "Dakota just played consistently well throughout," said Hein.
Sanoh also was key to the Vikings' victory. In addition to his 14 rebounds, Sanoh scored all seven of his points from the fourth quarter on, including a 3-pointer when Lake Stevens was down four at the end of regulation. He then hit the free throw that tied the game and sent it into the first overtime. He was fouled on an offensive rebound with 1.4 seconds remaining and made one of two.
