Cassidy was born Dec. 30, 1930, in Everett to John and Marie Cassidy. He graduated from Everett High School and was considered by his friends to be "president for life" of the Everett High Class of 1948. Cassidy graduated from Gonzaga University in 1952 and served in the Army during the Korean War.
Cassidy owned and operated Cassidy Funeral Home until 1979, when it merged with another longtime Everett funeral home to form Purdy & Walters with Cassidy. He was the manager for many years and senior director until he was hospitalized Dec. 28.
"He was still here at the funeral home, still active in the community," said his colleague, Levi Sutton, manager at Purdy & Walters with Cassidy Funeral Home.
Sutton said historical records show that John Jerread operated a funeral home in Everett in 1898. In the 1930s, Jerread joined with the Cassidy family to become Jerread-Cassidy. In 1955, it became the Cassidy Funeral Home.
Jim Cassidy was a past exalted ruler of Everett Elks 479 and past president of the Everett Golf and Country Club. He was a life member of Everett Knights of Columbus 763 and life member of John F. Kennedy Knights of Columbus Assembly 4th Degree. He belonged to the Everett Rotary Club for 30 years. He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and Immaculate Conception parishes in Everett.
"Jim was a proud Irish Catholic," Sutton said.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 2617 Cedar Ave. More information is available at www.purdy-walters-cassidy.com.
