The suspect, 29, allegedly was trying to ditch a stolen pickup truck at a gas station in the 400 block of W. Casino Road. He stepped out of the vehicle and started running.
"Fortunately," police wrote in court papers, "he left the truck in drive and as he attempted to jump a wooden fence, the truck hit it and along with the weight of his body the fence came tumbling down."
He was taken into custody moments later.
The suspect was arrested for investigation of two counts of assault, possessing a stolen vehicle and attempting to elude police.
Police were dispatched to the 9600 block of Holly Drive around 1:45 p.m. Monday for a vehicle prowl complaint. The suspect drove off in an orange pickup truck that already had been reported stolen.
Officers tracked the pickup to the Horizon Elementary School parking lot.
The driver had enough room to escape between the two patrol cars but allegedly struck the front end of one of them while driving about 30 mph.
He then put the pickup in reverse and rammed another patrol car, according to court papers.
Two officers complained of minor injuries.
The pursuit ended a short distance away when he tried to get out of the pickup and run.
In an email, Horizon principal Leslie Clauson told Mukilteo School District officials that the incident happened so quickly the school didn't have time to lock down the campus.
"A truck came racing through our parking lot followed by two police patrol cars in pursuit," Clauson wrote. "The driver was stopped and apprehended outside our parking lot."
