Devices isolate us when we gather

I am sitting in my classroom and looking around me ... the teacher isn't here yet and not one person is talking. During class when asked to provide answers, opinions and ideas by our teacher ... not one hand goes up but mine. I am losing my hearing? Is this a dream? Nope, this is how a classroom sounds today ... silent. This is how job lunch rooms, bank lines and grocery lines sound today, and why? I will tell you why -- we have become a society of silent, sullen, button-pushing morons,
No one talks to each other any more, no one has any empathy or compassion because we as a society are losing the ability to connect with other humans due to our total and utter lack of connection on a human level. We are becoming a generation of people connected electronically and I find that to be a crying shame. I sit in a classroom filled with young, intelligent minds and yet the room is silent, no one is talking, sharing, connecting, getting to know each other; all they are doing is staring into their hand-held, heart-breaking, mind-numbing devices and the human experience, our tapestry is deteriorating, thread by thread, right before my eyes and there is nothing I can do to stop it. Our very language is being altered to fit this new form of communication. "LOL" is now in Webster's as is "OMG" and a few other ridiculous forms of "code" now used to speak and write. Personally, I believe that when we look back at our civilization, "texting," though it appeared to be an innocent, insignificant and harmless form of communication, was one of those things that snuck up to destroy our society as a whole. These may sound like strong opinions but since when did I have anything but?
